Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) *Early Years*
Michelangelo Buonarroti or commonly known as Michelangelo was born in the year of 1474. Michelangelo was born in the small village of Caprese in Florence. He was the son of a government agent. When Michelangelo turned 12 years old he became an apprentice to Domenico Ghirlandajo one of the most popular painters in Florence.

Michelangelo started to travel in 1494 and moved to Rome. He lived in Rome from 1496 to 1501. This is where he carved in marble a life-size statue of the Roman wine god Bacchus. Michelangelo returned to Florence in 1501 and remained there until 1505.
