Martin Luther
Martin Luther was born in 1483. He was the son of a copper miner, and he had a good education. In 1501 he went to university to study law. In 1505 Martin became interested in religion. When he was twenty-two he became a monk as he was in a near death situation, so he thought he would lead a good life and go to heaven when he died, he knew he would disappoint his parents. Martin Luther was a German priest and university professor who started the Reformation that split apart Christianity in Europe. Martin Luther was convinced that the Catholic Church was no longer truly Christian, and that it was leading people off the straight and narrow. He started to publish his own beliefs such as “that an individual could only find salvation through his or her own relationship with God, and not through priests and saints”. The things he wrote criticized the Roman Catholic Church. For more information on Martin Luther my favourite sites are- wsu.edu/~dee/Reform/Luther.HTM-14k-, and Children’s Encarta
